Vic: Australian taxpayers to pay costs of holding heroin ship

Australian taxpayers face a mounting bill to keep the North Korean drug ship Pong Susecure as owners refuse to pay costs.

The Herald Sun reports today the freighter, which is under 24-hour guard in SydneyHarbour, has already cost more than $350,000 to secure and maintain since it was confiscatedby the Australian Federal Police in April.

Lawyers acting for the AFP have told the ship's owners that they are responsible forall costs associated with keeping it in Australian waters, but the owners have refusedto pay.

The newspaper says lawyers have estimated the ship could be held in Sydney Harbourfor at least another year before the matter is resolved.
