QLD:Flood terminology misleading: academic

BRISBANE, Jan 10 AAP - Describing a severe weather event as a "one-in-100-year flood"

is misleading and the term should be dropped, a Queensland academic says.

The term doesn't mean a flood will occur once in 100 years, but that there's a one
per cent chance of a flood happening in any given year, said Associate Professor Dann
Mallet, from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Queensland University of Technology
(QUT).
